BDSM: What is bondage and what do I have to watch out for when tying up!

4 Min. Lesezeit

Bondage is a branch of BDSM that refers to sexual games in which a person is restrained in some way to restrict their freedom of movement. Such tethering games can involve various psychological aspects. For example, in obedience bondage, where a person assumes a certain position after receiving a command from their dominant partner, without the use of physical tethers.

Most bondage practices, however, are physical in nature and can involve a variety of materials and tools. Such as silk, cuffs, handcuffs, shackles, bondage tape, ropes and elaborate kits. Practices can vary in intensity and range from light tying to elaborate and extreme tying techniques.

Tied-up games

It is important to stress that all bondage practices should be voluntary and consensual. Clear communication between the partners involved about desires, boundaries and taboos is essential to ensure that all participants feel comfortable and safe.

One of the best-known forms of bondage is so-called rope bondage. In which ropes are used to tie a person up. An elaborate variation of this is shibari, which was developed from a Japanese military bondage technique called hojojutsu. In Japan, however, the word Kinbaku is often used for what we in Europe call Shibari. And which is also often used in connection with BDSM bondage.

In order to gain sound knowledge of Bondage, it is important to know some technical terms. Here are some important terms:

  • Hojōjutsu: This is the origin of the Japanese type of bondage.
  • Shinju (USA): Refers to the bondage of the female breast and is a term coined in the USA. It should be distinguished from Shinjū (心中), which refers to the joint suicide of two lovers.
  • Sakurambo (USA): This technique refers to the bondage of the female genitalia. And is also a term coined in the USA. In Japan, the term matanawa (股縄, “crotch restraint”) is mostly used.
  • CBT (Cock and Ball Torture) restraint of the male genitals, partly a safety measure for more advanced types of play (ballbusting)
  • Tsuri(zeme): Means handcuffing or suspension.
  • Takate Kote Shibari: Refers to a basic upper body restraint technique with the hands fixed on the back.

With this expertise, one can better understand the various techniques and terms and have an informed say in conversations or at play.

What is the sexual appeal of bondage?

The sensation of restraint in bondage is a central attraction of bondage practices for many people. The bound person surrenders completely to the other person and depends on them to free him or her. Practices are often performed in combination with other BDSM practices, such as whipping or blindfolding. A special form of bondage is tying, where the blood supply to individual parts of the body is temporarily restricted, which can cause a feeling of numbness and an arousing moment of pleasure.

Rope bondage or Shibari also include the aesthetic aspect, calm, deceleration and security. Choosing the right ropes and the artful knots are important parts of this experience.

It is also important that the technique is used safely to avoid injury or harm. This includes avoiding numbness, circulation problems, bruising and nerve damage. People who use restraints should have basic anatomical knowledge to minimise these risks. It is also important that the person being restrained is never left unattended. For example, when restraining joints, it is important to maintain sufficient distance between the restraints and the bones to avoid nerve damage. When restraining limbs, the restraints should not be applied too tightly to prevent blood circulation problems and numbness.

Additionally, safety tools such as safety scissors should always be within reach during bondage in order to be able to act quickly in an emergency. It is also advisable to be aware of potential health risks and safety issues to avoid unwanted injuries or infections.

Always supervise a tied person to prevent unexpected harm. When using toys like gags, blindfolds, and whips, be mindful of anatomy to prevent injury. Moreover, it is crucial to prioritize the right of all participants to halt or revoke consent whenever necessary. Prioritizing safety measures and consent is vital for a secure and satisfying experience.

How do I get started?

If you are interested in bondage and want to try it out, there are some important steps to follow:
